The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it has summoned two officers seen in a viral video escorting the Adamawa State University students’ union president.

On Tuesday, a video of the armed police officers escorting the union president went viral on social media.

The video showed the police officers walking beside a car conveying the unnamed union president at an event while other students hailed and cheered him.

In a statement on Monday, the police force condemned the officers’ actions and noted that the operatives, who are attached to the Jimeta command, were deployed to maintain order during the union’s convention in the state.

The statement said the officers and their superiors had been summoned to the force headquarters, adding that they have also been referred for disciplinary actions.

“Following a recent incident involving two Constables escorting a Student Union president in Adamawa State, their actions were unacceptable and do not represent the values of our Force,” the statement reads.

“The officers, who are attached to Jimeta Divisional Police Command, along with their superiors, have been summoned to the Force Headquarters for appropriate action.

“It’s important to note that they were deployed to maintain peace and security during the convention and electoral process organized by the National Union of Adamawa State Students (NUADSS) on 4th and 5th of September, 2023.

“However their actions were not in line with the purpose for which they were deployed. They have both been referred to the Force Provost for further disciplinary actions.

“We are committed to maintaining professionalism and upholding the dignity of the Nigeria Police Force.”
