It’s the 29th of May.
To Nigerians, that means something.
No its not anything that clutches at your heart and gives you goose bumps or sends a flush of tears to your eyes in gratitude.
For most of us, it is simply just- a day off work.
The other day my son asked me ‘What exactly is democracy day’
I gave a ready answer- May 29 marks the day Nigeria became liberated from military rule and now we get to choose our leadership and play a part in how we as a people and Nigeria generally is governed.
As soon as I said that, I saw a thousand questions in his eyes, he was only able to ask one before it was time to head to school.
What part are you playing? He said.
Our environment forms the bedrock of who we become as a people.
This environment can be geographical but it is also abstract; the environment of our minds, our thoughts, our actions.
You aren’t responsible for a lot of things; the weather is one of them. To a large extent, you aren’t responsible for the traffic too, the roads are terrible you see. But one thing you are mostly responsible for is how you decide to react, adapt and find solutions to many challenges your environment throws at you.
For instance, you can choose not to drive the wrong way because there’s traffic, or throw out the banana peels from your car because the rains can wash it away.
We all can make these choices.
While we are not solely responsible for the state of our nation, what we are responsible for are the choices and decisions we make in our sphere of influence. This is where we have control over. We are not responsible for the weather, but we are responsible for how we respond to it when we’re caught in it negatively.
You and I, together. I can allow your difference, and you can permit mine.
We are the new Nigeria. We can choose to rise above the chaos.
No huge expectations, just responsibility.
Saying-
‘This is Nigeria, …but look how we’re living now’

Remember Freedom is Peace; Optimism is Nature; Action is always within reach. BE MORE!
