Three persons have been confirmed dead and many others displaced as a result of flooding in Ayakoro settlement in Ogbia LGA of Bayelsa.

According to NAN, Ayibaina Duba, Bayelsa commissioner for information, made this known on Thursday while commiserating with the families of the victims.

Righteous Inegbagha, the paramount ruler of the community, called on the federal and state governments to take urgent steps to mitigate the impact of the flood on the people.

He said the flood disaster had not only rendered thousands of his people homeless, but had also affected their means of livelihood and other economic activities.

The traditional ruler said for a week, people in his community have been living in water-logged houses.

“Our people cannot visit their farms due to the ravaging effects of the disaster,” he said.

Inegbagha, who said his palace has been overcrowded by people without no homes, asked the government to evacuate the residents to temporary camps.

He also asked that relief materials, such as food, clothes and drugs be provided for those affected.

Many Nigerian states are experiencing flooding, which has resulted in hundreds of deaths, while hundreds of thousands of persons have been displaced.

The federal government has also said it cannot yet assess the level of damage.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari who met with governors recently, promised to intervene to bring about a lasting solution.
