President Bola Tinubu has implored police officers across the country to use their authority to serve and protect and not to intimidate or abuse Nigerians.
The president gave the charge on Wednesday at the second edition of the police award and commendation ceremony held in Abuja.
Tinubu who was represented by Godswill Akpabio, the senate president, said his administration remains committed to transforming the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to meet the expectations of Nigerians.
“While the federal government will continue to do its part, I must also charge every police officer, regardless of rank or posting, to uphold the sacred trust bestowed upon you by the Nigerian people,” he said.

“Be reminded that the power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service to your fatherland.
“You must be guided by the highest standard of accountability and professionalism. Uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of every citizen and reject all forms of misconduct and corruption.”
He described the event not just as a celebration, but a reminder of the values and responsibilities officers must uphold.

During the event, Akpabio donated N5 million to the family of Aniedi Cecilia Udoh, an assistant commissioner of police who died in active service in May.
She was honoured posthumously with the ‘Community Policing Advocate of the Year 2024’ award.
Akpabio also recalled his past support for the police, including the donation of vehicles, building of police infrastructure, and other initiatives during his tenure as governor and now as senate president.
In his remarks, Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police, said the ongoing reforms in the force are a daily commitment, not just a slogan.
