President Bola Tinubu and Omolola Oloworaran, director general of the National Pension Commission
President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate implementation of a free healthcare initiative for low-income retirees under Nigeria’s contributory pension scheme (CPS).
In a statement on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, Tinubu said the move is a crucial part of his administration’s commitment to social protection and dignity in retirement.
Onanuga said the directive came after a briefing by Omolola Oloworaran, the director general of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), at the State House in Abuja.
“He also called for the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, which would provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS,” the statement reads.

The president also ordered PenCom to urgently resolve the longstanding issue of police pensions, saying security personnel who dedicate their lives to protecting the country deserve to retire in peace.
During the meeting, Oloworaran briefed Tinubu on efforts to safeguard the value of pension fund assets amid inflation and economic challenges.
She also outlined plans to introduce foreign currency contributions to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
