Tiwa Savage, a singer-songwriter, is one of five Nigerians named among ONE’s 2018 women of the year.

ONE is a campaigning and advocacy organisation of more than nine million people around the world taking action to end extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.

Listing her achievements, the advocacy organisation said Savage has broken boundaries in the music scene and topped it with her community-based humanitarian work in female health, education and civil rights.

Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin, activist and founder of Pearls Africa Foundation, and Lola Omolola, founder of popular Facebook group, Female IN (FIN), were celebrated for creating positive impact in the lives of young girls and women through technology and social media.

Waje Iruobe, singer-songwriter and Bisola Aiyeola, singer-actress — both ONE ambassadors — were recognised for their advocacy work on behalf of women.

“We wanted to give special recognition to a handful of women who went above and beyond for gender equality this year,” a post on ONE’s website read.

Recipients of this year’s award include activists, authors, actresses, Nobel Prize winners, doctors, and presidents — a total of 19 women from around the world.

Danai Gurira, Hollywood actress, and Sahle-Work Zewde, Ethiopian president, are some other prominent women on the list.
