A member of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and paralympics organising committee has tested positive for the COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by coronavirus.

According to Reuters, the organiser, in a statement, said the man, who is in his 30s, had tested positive on Tuesday and has been quarantined in his home.

“The organising committee has identified those who have had close contact with the patient and entered them in home isolation from today, while the floor where the individual worked will be closed off and disinfected,” the statement read.

It is believed that most of Tokyo 2020’s approximately 3,800 staff have been working from home since the Japanese government announced a state of emergency earlier this month.

On March 24, the organisers of this year’s  Tokyo Olympic games had postponed the summer event by one year due to the coronavirus crisis.

The continuing spread of the virus means even the date is uncertain, according to Toshiro Muto, head of the Tokyo organising committee.

The Olympic games has been scheduled for July 23, 2021 and is expected to run until August 8. The games were originally supposed to have begun on July 24, until August 9.
