Tokyo Paralympics: Nigeria wins third gold as Oluwafemiayo sets new record

Nigeria’s Folashade Oluwafemiayo has won gold in the women’s powerlifting at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Oluwafemiayo claimed Nigeria’s third gold medal in the 86kg category.

She also broke her former world record set in Manchester on March 28, 2021, with her second lift of 151kg.

Oluwafemiayo then went on to set a new Paralympic record after lifting 152kg on Monday morning.

Zheng Feifei of China claimed the silver medal with a 139kg lift while Sugden Loiuse of Great Britain went home with the bronze after lifting 131kg.

The 36-year-old became the third Nigerian to win a gold medal for the nation after Tijani Latifat and Bose Omolayo.

The feat also brings Nigeria’s total number of medals at the ongoing event to five with three gold and two bronze medals — all coming from powerlifting.
