About 12 students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, Ogun state, were crushed to death along Sagamu/Benin expressway in Ilishan Remo north local government area of the state on Friday.

The students, who were heading to Lagos, were on board a Toyota Haiace passenger bus with registration number XV 311 MUS (LAGOS).

The bus collided with a truck marked BDG 779 XE (LAGOS), resulting to the death of all the occupants.

Tommy Hamzat, commander of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ijebu, blamed the truck driver for the incident.

He alleged that the driver was moving against traffic.

“I was coming from Sagamu and saw the accident, I parked my car and ran there to see if the passengers could be rescued but unfortunately all the occupants were dead including the driver,” he told journalists.

“Though the bus was facing Lagos, I don’t know where it was coming from. The container truck with no load in it was coming from Sagamu side but was driving against the traffic and that resulted in the collision, which eventually claimed the lives of the innocent people.”

Muyiwa Adejobi, the state police public relations officer, confirmed the incident but did not give details.
