Tragedy averted at Stephen Keshi Stadium as water tank collapses

A tragedy was on averted at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, venue of the ongoing African Athletics Championship, after an overhead tank collapsed.

No casualties were recorded in the incident which took place on Thursday.

According to Celestine Karoney of BBC Africa, part of the newly built stadium caved in, destroying three vehicles parked close to the overhead tank.

“A Kenyan official actually called me to say they were almost crushed,” Karoney told TheCable.

Karoney also recounted her ordeal while trying to use the restroom at the stadium.

“I went to the bathroom next to the media centre and was told it’s for athletes,” she said.

“I had to get someone from local organising committee to tell them that’s BS and to let them let me in.”

TheCable understands that journalists have no power outlets to plug their equipment in the media tribune of the Asaba stadium.

Journalist at the championship were provided no chairs and had to sit on the floor to get their work done.

TheCable also gathered that the athletes have no changing room.

The athletes reportedly change their tracks in the open before heading out for their races.
