According to Kayode Owolabi, a captain and army public relations officer (APRO), the incident occurred at Efut Esighi in Bakassi local government area of Cross River state.

He said the militants were the boys of the most wanted militant leader, Benjamin Ene also known as ‘G1’ who has been on the wanted list of security agencies in the state.
