Troops kill suspected bandit in Kwara community

Troops of the 22 armoured brigade have killed a suspected bandit during an operation in Edu LGA of Kwara state.

In a statement on Thursday, Stephen Nwankwo, acting assistant director of army public relations, said the operation was conducted by soldiers deployed to the forward operating base in Patigi.

Nwankwo said the troops, acting on credible intelligence, laid an ambush on Daban-Lema road on Thursday.

He added that the troops were on a fighting patrol within the Gbugbu general area and sustained pressure on criminal elements in the region.

“At about 12:10am, the vigilant troops following credible intelligence on movement of armed bandits along Daban-Lema Road, Edu LGA, conducted ambush and subsequently attacked the miscreants,” Nwankwo said.

“During exchange of fire, the soldiers overpowered the criminals with superior firepower, forcing them to withdraw in disarray.

“Also, subsequent exploitation along the bandits’ withdrawal route, the troops neutralised one bandit.

“Items recovered include an AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a motorcycle.”

Nwankwo added that the remains of the suspect have been handed over to the appropriate authorities.

Ezra Barkins, commander of the 22 armoured brigade, commended the troops for their vigilance and resilience.

Barkins urged them to remain determined in the fight against insecurity, noting that the brigade is committed to protecting lives and property.
