Troops of the Nigeria Army (NA) have reportedly rescued six female students of the Federal University of Gusau abducted by bandits in Zamfara.

An unspecified number of students of the university were reportedly abducted in the early hours of Friday from their rented lodge in Sabon Gida, Bungudu LGA of the state.

In a statement, Suleiman Idris, senior special assistant on media to the governor of Zamfara, said the troops also killed many of the terrorists during a gun battle.

Idris said Dauda Lawal, governor of the state, has summoned all security heads for an emergency meeting over the abduction of the students.

He said the meeting was called to deliberate on how to secure the release of all the abducted students and find a lasting solution to the issues of insecurity in the state.

“During the meeting, the security chiefs assured the deputy governor of their commitment to restoring peace in the state,” the statement reads.

“They equally unequivocally confirmed to the deputy governor that troops had successfully rescued six kidnap victims.

“The security chiefs further assured that troops had neutralised scores of the kidnappers and are actively pursuing them to ensure the safe rescue of all victims.

“The deputy governor has reassured the people of Zamfara that security operatives are working tirelessly to address the current situation.”

In June, students of the university protested the rising cases of abduction in the Sabon-Gida and Dama communities.

Also, five students were abducted from the College of Health Science and Technology in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara state in June.
