‘True Nigerian icon’ — ADC pays tribute to Peter Rufai

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has mourned the passing of Peter Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper.

The ADC described Rufai, who died at on Thursday at the age of 61, as a “true Nigerian icon”.

A statement on Friday by Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC spokesperson, said Rufai, fondly known as Dodo Mayana, was not only a footballer but a “symbol of national pride”.

“As a giant of African football, Peter Rufai exemplified the brilliance, courage, and determination of the Nigerian spirit,” Abdullahi said.

“On the field, he was not just a player — he was a symbol of pride for an entire nation.”

The former minister of sports and youth development said Rufai’s passion and skill were evident in every performance for the Super Eagles.

“Today, as we celebrate his remarkable life, we also mourn the passing of a man and a legend whose love for the beautiful game and deep devotion to his country inspired generations,” Abdullahi said.

He added that Rufai’s impact extended beyond the pitch, uniting Nigerians across divides during difficult moments.

“In times when sports provided hope and brought Nigerians together across all divides, he stood as a beacon of excellence and dignity,” he said.

The ADC also extended condolences to Rufai’s family, the Nigerian football community, and all those affected by his death.

Rufai’s death is the latest exit from the list of ex-international that made up the celebrated 1994 AFCON-winning squad.

Other members of the squad who have died include Wilfred Agbonavbare, Tom Oliha, Uche Okafor, Rashidi Yekini and Stephen Keshi.
