Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating US President Donald Trump for possible obstruction of justice, the Washington Post reports.

Mueller is said to be probing the alleged interference by Russia in the 2016 presidential election and the involvement of Trump’s campaign organisation.

Quoting five people who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the Post said Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, the head of the national security agency, and Richard Ledgett, the former deputy director at the NSA, had agreed to be interviewed by Mueller’s investigators.

Investigators are said to also be looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates.

Trump has been accused of attempting to sway former FBI director James Comey into ditching an investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Flynn was found to have held private conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and subsequently lied to vice-president Mike Pence about the nature of his rapport with Russian officials.

He resigned as national security adviser in February after less than a month in the role.

The obstruction of justice investigation into Trump was said to have commenced days after Comey was fired on May 9.

Obstruction of justice could form the basis for the impeachment of a US president.

Meanwhile, Trump’s legal team on Wednesday night slammed the report.

“The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal,” said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump’s legal team.
