Bayern Munich have announced head coach Thomas Tuchel will leave the club in the summer. 

The Bundesliga champions in a statement on Wednesday said it will be ending Tuchel’s contract on June 30, 2024. The contract was originally set to run until June 30, 2025.

“FC Bayern Munich and head coach Thomas Tuchel have jointly decided to end their working relationship, which was originally set to run until 30 June 2025, on 30 June 2024,” the statement reads.

“This is the outcome of a constructive discussion between CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and Thomas Tuchel.”

Tuchel is leaving the club following a string of poor results. Bayern have lost three straight matches for the first time since 2015 and sit eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the table.

“In a good, open discussion, we came to the decision to end our working relationship by mutual agreement in the summer,” said Dreesen.

“Our goal is to pursue a new footballing direction with a new head coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every individual at the club is expressly called upon to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and Bundesliga.

“I also explicitly hold the team accountable in this regard. In the Champions League in particular, after losing 1-0 in the first leg at Lazio, we are convinced we will reach the quarter-finals at a packed Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.”

Reacting to his impending exit, Tuchel said he will continue to work towards achieving success for the club.

Tuchel replaced Julian Nagelsmann, surprisingly sacked as head coach of FC Bayern, in March 2023.

He won the German Bundesliga title with the Bavarians last season.
