Ben Bruce, senator representing Bayelsa east, is well known for his activeness on social media.

In fact, at various times he has been taunted as being more active online than on the floor of the senate.

Among the various social media platforms, his activeness peeks on Twitter where he comments on social and politic issues, usually from a “common sense” perspective.

The senator took to his Twitter handle to condemn the seeming injustice done to “less privileged” Nigerians.

In specific reference to the sentencing of a farmer who was said to have stolen N170, Bruce wondered if Nigeria is truly civilised when it also adores men who steal billions of naira.

On Friday, a Delta state high court sentenced one Francis Williams to death by hanging for stealing a phone valued at N5,000 and a cash sum of N170.

“How can we sentence a farmer who stole ₦170 and give men who stole ₦170 billion titles in our churches and mosques and say we are civilized?” the senator tweeted.

But a Twitter user who goes by the name Japhet Philip subsequently picked holes in the senator’s tweet.

In a comeback reply, Philips also posed the question of Nigeria’s civilisation to the senator but this time, weighing in on his being paid for being a “Twitter senator.”

He replied thus: “And how can we pay a civil servant who works 21 days a month 18k and a Twitter senator 39m and say we are civilized?”

Another Twitter user whose name is Joi, however, came to the senator’s rescue, when she replied Philips’ tweet, saying: “If u follow Murray -Bruce’s campaign u will know he said he didn’t mind a pay cut.”
