Two people died on Monday after a truck rolled backwards and triggered a crash involving three vehicles at Tipper Garage along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Adekunle Ajibade, commander of the Ogun traffic compliance and enforcement corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

Ajibade said the crash occurred around 7:40 pm and involved 14 individuals.

He listed the vehicles involved as a DAF truck (JJJ 144 XD), a Mazda bus (EPE 394 XP), and a tricycle (DGB 599 VC).

According to him, the truck had been left on an incline near a warehouse opposite Tipper Garage, with the engine running and the handbrake engaged.

“The driver stepped away to hand over a waybill to the security personnel at the warehouse gate,” he said.

Ajibade detailed that the truck began to reverse after the handbrake disengaged, rolling onto the expressway and causing a collision that resulted in two fatalities and nine injuries.

“Three of the occupants were not hurt; the bodies have been deposited at Ifo General Hospital, while those injured are being treated at the same hospital,” he said.

Ajibade added that officers from TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) responded to the scene and cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow.

He urged road users to maintain safe speeds and comply with traffic safety guidelines.
