The Kano Fire Service says two men identified as Usman Muhammed and Ibrahim Inuwa have died while attempting to retrieve a mobile phone from a pit toilet.
Saminu Abdullahi, spokesperson of the fire service, said in a statement issued on Sunday that the incident occurred on Saturday in Bazabe village, Albasu LGA of the state.
Abdullahi said Muhammed had accidentally dropped his phone into the toilet and got trapped while attempting to retrieve it.
He noted that Inuwa, in an attempt to rescue Muhammed, tied a rope around himself and entered the latrine, but he also got trapped.
