Two farmers identified as Akocha Aisami and Yakubu Isuwa have been killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Boftari, Kuburmbula ward of Chibok local government area of Borno state.

A witness told TheCable  insurgents came on motorbikes at about 2pm on Saturday and started shooting sporadically in the area where the villagers were farming.

Residents who spoke with TheCable said the insurgents have been coming in the past two weeks to loot without any resistance, but were shocked they came shooting on Saturday.

“We have been seeing them everyday come around, and we don’t argue with them when they demand for food items,” a resident told TheCable.

“Today, about 12 of them came in through Gogombi and opened fire on those who were on the farm, killing Akocha and Yakubu who were tired and couldn’t run to save their lives.”

About 10 other farmers were also said to have sustained injuries from the gunshots, and the source said most villagers are now scared of going to the farm.

TheCable gathered that troops from the army’s 117 task force battalion immediately moved into the community that is 9 kilometres away from Chibok, the local government headquarters, and recovered the bodies of the farmers.

“The troops are trying, but the attackers had gone before they got there,” another resident said.

“You know it’s rainy season, and the road is not too good for the troops to easily move. Again, we also need more soldiers to strengthen this fight. The few on ground are already overwhelmed.”

Sources told TheCable that the insurgents attacked Pemi ward in Chibok and abducted five children.

The insurgents also attacked Kaikautikari community in Chibok on Tuesday, burning houses.
