Two staff members of the Damboa Local Education Authority (LEA) died when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off on Monday along the Damboa-Maiduguri highway in Borno state.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the victims identified as Blessings Luka and Gideon Bitterleaf were travelling from Damboa to Maiduguri when the incident occurred.
Makama noted that the victims were sitting in front of a Toyota Hiace van transporting mangoes when the vehicle struck an IED suspected to have been planted by terrorists.
The publication added that security operatives have commenced investigations to identify those responsible for the attack, adding that the area has been sealed off.

In recent times, there has been a spike in IED explosions in Borno as insurgents are launching fresh attacks.
On May 9, five children were injured following the explosion of an IED in Mafa LGA of the state.
At least 26 people lost their lives, and three others were injured after an IED detonated on April 29 along the Rann–Kala Balge–Gamboru Ngala highway in Borno.

On April 12, eight travellers were killed when another IED exploded on the Maiduguri-Damboa road in the state.
Four passengers were killed, and four others were injured in an IED explosion under a commercial vehicle in Biu LGA of the state on March 21.
