Two officers of the counter-terrorism unit (CTU) of the Abia police command have reportedly been killed in an ambush at Obehie, a boundary town between Rivers and Abia.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the incident occurred around 1:20 am on September 4 when “more than 20 armed men in three SUVs” attacked operatives manning a sandbag checkpoint.
Makama said the officers engaged the attackers in a gun duel and repelled the assault, forcing some of the assailants to flee with gunshot wounds.
“The operatives engaged the assailants in a gun duel and successfully repelled the attack. Some of the attackers escaped with gunshot wounds,” a source was quoted as saying.

“Unfortunately, two of our operatives, Inspector Ishaya Audu and Inspector Anthony Emmanuel, paid the supreme price during the encounter. Their rifles were also carted away by the attackers.”
The publication noted that the attackers’ vehicles were riddled with bullets, while tactical teams have been deployed for reinforcement.
He also said sources revealed that search and combing operation is ongoing to recover stolen arms and arrest suspects.
