The Yobe state police on Tuesday paraded two soldiers and three other persons over the alleged murder of Goni Aisami, an Islamic cleric.

Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesperon of the state police command, said the principal suspect, John Gabriel, a lance corporal, was arrested alongside his accomplice, Adamu Gideon, both of the 241 Recce Battalion, Nguru.

Aisami was allegedly killed on Friday by Gabriel after the former offered him a ride.

The police spokesperson said Gabriel admitted to killing the cleric and seizing his car, after which he called on Gideon for help when the victim’s car failed to start.

“However, nemesis caught up with the culprits when a passerby going to his farm early in the morning saw the corpse, a vehicle and some people and alerted the police from Jaji who promptly mobilised and raced down to the scene,” Abdulkarim said.

“This led to the arrest of the two soldiers and recovery of the corpse, the deceased’s vehicle and the rifle used in the commission of the offence”

He said the incident is still being probed and that the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
