The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command says its operatives foiled a kidnap attempt at Guto village in Bwari area council.

A statement on Thursday by Josephine Adeh, the FCT police spokesperson, said the command received a distress call at 1:10 am and immediately deployed personnel to the area.

She said the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when armed men numbering about 30 invaded the community.

The attackers were said to have targeted a resident and his family.

Adeh said the operation was led by the surveillance team of the Bwari division, working in conjunction with the IGP’s special intervention squad.

“Responding swiftly, the Bwari Division’s Surveillance Team, in conjunction with the IGP Special Intervention Squad (SIS), mobilised to the scene,” the statement reads.

“Upon sighting the Police team, the attackers opened fire. The officers responded with superior firepower, engaging the attackers in a heated gun duel.

“In the ensuing firefight, the Police team neutralized two of the assailants, while the remainder fled into the surrounding bushes and mountains for safety.

“Tragically, one Police officer sustained a fatal gunshot injury during the exchange and was rushed to Bwari General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

“The Command deeply regrets this loss, as the officer paid the supreme price in the line of duty.”

She said Miller Dantawaye, FCT commissioner of police, has deployed more officers to the community to enhance security.
