Uba Sani appoints former Kaduna varsity VC as education commissioner

Abubakar Sambo, the new Kaduna commissioner for education

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, has appointed Abubakar Sambo as the commissioner for education in the state.

Sani redeployed Sani Bello, the outgoing education commissioner, to the newly created ministry of information.

A statement by Ibraheem Musa, chief press secretary (CPS) to the governor, said Gloria Ibrahim has been appointed as the commissioner for youth development.

Musa said the redeployment and appointments are with immediate effect.

“Governor Uba Sani expects Prof. Abubakar Sambo to reinvigorate the Education Ministry to deliver on his administration’s agenda, which is aimed at improving access to education, building and rehabilitating infrastructure, enhancing the capacity of teachers, harnessing the capacity of ICT, prioritising girl-child education and strengthening security in schools,” the statement reads.

“In line with his administration’s focus on refocusing and empowering Kaduna State youths to play vital roles in a fast-changing and technologically driven world, Governor Uba Sani expects Barrister Gloria Ibrahim to fashion out creative, innovative and implementable programmes and projects to make the Youth Development Ministry a leading centre for high-impact solutions for youth-related issues.”

BRIEF PROFILES OF THE APPOINTEES

Sambo is a professor in energy studies and former vice-chancellor of Kaduna State University.

He also served as the vice-chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, from 1995 to 2004.

From 1990 to 1994, he served as the deputy vice-chancellor (academic) of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

He also served as the director-general of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) from 2005 to 2012.

In 2011, he was appointed as special adviser to the president on energy.

Gloria Ibrahim is a lawyer. She was a principal legal practitioner at Glownom Legal Consult in Kaduna.

She earned the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

She is a member of the Association of Professional Negotiators and Mediators (APNM), Child Protection Agency (CPN), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
