Uba Sani approves indefinite continuation of free CNG bus service in Kaduna

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, has approved the indefinite continuation of free compressed natural gas (CNG) bus service in the state.

A statement on Friday by Ahmed Maiyaki, commissioner for information, said the governor’s decision followed a performance review of the scheme between July and November 2025.

Maiyaki, who described the scheme as having a significant impact on residents, said the initiative has saved households an estimated N1.39 billion in transportation.

“These are not just numbers, they represent school fees paid, food on the table, small businesses staying afloat, and thousands moving daily without the burden of transport costs,” the statement reads.

He noted that the 100 CNG-powered buses operating across the state have conveyed more than 1.4 million passengers in five months.

Maiyaki said the service currently provides free transport service to more than 18,000 commuters daily, making it one of Kaduna’s most effective social intervention programmes.

“The relief on the faces of our people and the gratitude in their voices remind us that leadership must always reduce the burdens of ordinary citizens,” Sani was quoted as saying.

“For this reason, I have approved the indefinite continuation of the Free CNG Mass Transit Scheme.”

Maiyaki reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding safe, affordable and environmentally friendly transport as part of its broader human capital development agenda.
