Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state, has expressed support for the ongoing constitution amendment process.
Speaking on Friday in Kaduna, when he received members of the house of representatives committee on constitution amendment at the government house, Sani backed the proposal to reserve seats for women in elective and appointive positions.
The committee is scheduled to hold the zonal (north-west) public hearing on the constitution review on Saturday (today).
Bills seeking to create special seats for women in the national assembly and affirmative action in political party administration are among the gender bills being considered by the committee.

Sani, represented by Hadiza Balarabe, his deputy, said public hearings are key to eliciting citizens’ opinions on the constitution amendment.
“This is democracy in action. Broadening participation, encouraging robust conversation and ensuring that diverse perspectives and voices across the country are heard and reflected in the national framework,” Sani said.
Sani said the constitution review is “not merely a legal exercise but a bold democratic act”.

“It is about addressing perceived imbalances, fixing structural and governance flaws, strengthening federalism and responding to the genuine yearnings of Nigerians for a more fair, just, inclusive and effective system,” the governor said.
“This is indeed an opportunity to make our positions known constructively, boldly and patriotically.
“The quality of the constitution depends on the input we bring into this process. Let us not sit on the sidelines; let us be heard.
“Weak participation of women in politics is something worth addressing. Therefore, I support the constitution amendment that will grant women a special quota in elected and appointive positions in government.”
