Uba Sani champion of gender-friendly policies, says DG

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state, has been described as a leading advocate for women empowerment and inclusive governance in the country. 

The commendation came from Sanusi Yero, director general of the Kaduna state Public Procurement Authority (KADPPA), during a press briefing on Wednesday.

Yero said the governor’s commitment to gender-friendly policies is commendable, adding that Kaduna recently received recognition for its efforts.

“Last week, at the 9th Voice of Women Conference and Awards (VOW2025) in Abuja, KADPPA won the award for ‘The Government Agency Supporting Women and Their Families,’” Yero said.

“This achievement reflects governor Uba Sani’s political will, institutional support, and policy direction.”

Yero said Kaduna is the first subnational entity in Nigeria to implement a gender-responsive procurement policy.

He said the policy offers financial incentives and reservation benefits to women-owned businesses, aligning with global best practices.

Yero said under the policy, registration fees for women-owned businesses have been waived entirely by KADPPA, while non-refundable tender fees have been cut by 50 percent.

He said other government agencies have also reduced registration fees by half for women-owned enterprises.

The DG said the policy further reserves 20 percent of all goods contracts, 10 percent of consulting contracts, and 5 percent of works contracts exclusively for women, adding that if a bid receives no response, women-owned businesses are given priority during relaunch.

Yero described Sani’s administration as one actively addressing systemic discrimination against women through affirmative action.

“We are humbled by the award and remain committed to advancing women empowerment in line with the governor’s vision,” he said.
