Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, has inaugurated projects to encourage girl child education as part of the activities to mark his 100 days in office.
Sani launched a block of hostels at the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Kawo-Kad, and the Zaria Metropolitan Authority office complex.
Speaking during the inauguration on Friday, he said the hostel’s reconstruction is to fulfil the government’s promise to rebuild the boarding house after it was ravaged by fire in 2020.
He said the hostels were renovated to demonstrate the importance the government places on girl child education.
The governor had on Thursday launched 62 new Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) in the state.
The project was supported by the World Bank Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project across the 23 LGAs.
The project is expected to support the construction of 93 schools before the end of 2025.
“As you are aware, Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children in the whole world,” he said.
“As I speak, we have about 14 out-of-school children, Kaduna state has about 500,000.
“We have reached out to all our rural communities so that these projects are situated in communities to give our children to go to school.
“In Kaduna primary and secondary schools, education is free. But beyond that, we believe that we must take the schools closer to them.”
The governor said education is one of the major priorities of his administration, adding that the initiatives will address the challenges of out-of-school children.
