UCL: Lookman scores in Atalanta’s win as Liverpool lose at Anfield again

Ademola Lookman

Liverpool succumbed to a 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) encounter at Anfield on Wednesday.

The Merseyside team was poor in defence again and did not click in attack as the Dutch visitors scored twice in the second half, Guus Til and Couhaib Driouech (brace) added to Ivan Perisic’s opener. Dominik Szoboszlai levelled for Liverpool before the second-half collapse.

PSV went ahead in six minutes from a penalty kick awarded for Virgil van Dijk’s handball, and Perisic converted with aplomb. Szoboszlai restored parity ten minutes later, tucking home the rebound from Cody Gakpo’s saved shot.

Both sides continued to chase the next goal, and it was the visitors who went toe-to-toe with Liverpool that got the well-deserved second goal and clincher. Til restored PSV’s lead with a well-placed finish on 56 minutes after latching on to Mauro Junior’s defence-splitting pass. Driouech then sealed the stunning victory with a late brace, converting a rebound in the 73rd minute before finding the bottom corner with a well-placed shot in added time to finish off the Reds.

Defeat is Liverpool’s seventh in eight matches, and they suffered a second UCL defeat of the season. Liverpool have also conceded three or more goals in the last three matches for the first time since 1992.

In the other big match of the night, Arsenal put on another gritty display despite injuries to defeat Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium. Jurrien Timber, Noni Madueke, and Gabriel Martinelli were all on the scoresheet for the Gunners, who are fast becoming the competition’s favourites. Arsenal’s victory maintained the North London club’s unbeaten status in the UCL this season, while Bayern’s defeat was their first in Europe.

It was also a big night for Ademola Lookman, who contributed a goal and an assist in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. The Super Eagles of Nigeria forward scored the opener on the hour and assisted the second goal two minutes later.

Kylian Mbappe, however, provided the best individual display of the night with all four goals as Real Madrid came from a goal down to defeat Olympiakos 4-3 in Greece.
