UCL: Man City, Real Madrid advance to quarter-final

Manchester City defeated FC Copenhagen 3-1 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 encounter on Wednesday to win the tie 6-2 on aggregate.
Manuel Akanji, Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland all scored in the first half to seal the easy passage into the last eight of the competition for the reigning UCL champions.
Man City went two-nil up within the first 10 minutes; Akanji finishing off Alvarez’s corner delivery with the volley on five minutes before the Argentine striker’s long-range effort slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands in the ninth minute.
Although Mohamed Elyounoussi halved the deficit on 29 minutes, Haaland put the game out of the Danish club’s reach when he pounced with a low finish in added time of the first period.
Haaland’s goals means he is joint top scorer in this season’s competition with six goals alongside Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe.
Man City cruised through the entire second period to advance, joining the duo of Bayern Munich and PSG in the last eight.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid also joined the trio in the next round following a 1-1 draw on the night, and a 2-1 aggregate victory for the 14-time UCL champions.
Vinicius Jr scored for Los Merengue who were pegged back and dominated for long spells by their German opponent. It will be Real Madrid’s 12th quarter-final appearance in 14 seasons.
