UCL results: Bayern thrash Atletico as Real Madrid lose at home

Bayern Munich, UEFA Champions League (UCL) winners, have begun their 2020/21 season with a win while Real Madrid were defeated at home by Shakhtar Donetsk.

The German side brilliantly dispatched Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Allianz Arena stadium, thanks to a brace from Kingsley Coman and additional goals from Leon Goretzka and Correntin Tolisso.

Coman opened and finished the scoring on Wednesday night, firing across goal from Joshua Kimmich’s pass for 1-0 before he dispatched the ball into the far corner for 4-0 on 72 minutes.

Goretzka and Tolisso both added a goal apiece on 41 and 62 minutes respectively to give the early favourites for this season’s competition a dominant victory in a match they had 16 shots on goal.

Real Madrid, the 13-time UCL winners, were humiliated 3-2 at home by Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukranian league champions, who had 13 of their first team players missing the trip to Spain after their COVID-19 test results came out positive.

Woeful defending allowed Cardoso ‘Tete’ Martins put the visitors ahead on 29 minutes while Raphael Varane’s own goal four minutes later made it 2-0 in favour of the visitors. The third goal came on 42 minutes through Solomon, following a slick one-touch passing move.

Real Madrid would reply with two goals in five minutes early in the second period through Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior. They were, however, denied the comeback by the video assistant referee (VAR) system in the final minute.

Federico Valverde’s shot was dropped by the goalkeeper into the net but the goal was ruled out after the referee adjudged Vinicius Junior to have obstructed the goalkeeper’s view and was in an offside position.

In other matches, Liverpool won 1-0 at Ajax, thanks to an own goal in Amsterdam, while Manchester City came from a goal down to win 3-1 at the Etihad stadium.

Inter Milan were, however, held to a 2-2 draw at home by Borussia Monchengladbach.
