Liverpool scored twice in the first half to overcome ten-man Atletico Madrid in their UEFA champions league (UCL) encounter at Anfield on Wednesday.
Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane gave Jurgen Klopp’s side an early two-goal lead and victory in a match they could have scored more, with Atletico losing Luis Felipe to a straight dismissal for a bad tackle.
The victory ensured Liverpool qualified for the knockout phase of the competition with two games to spare.
In the other match of the night, Real Madrid defeated Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine with Karim Benzema scoring both goals for the 13-time UCL winners in a 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
The 33-year-old Frenchman’s first was the Spanish club’s 1000th goal in European football’s elite club competition before the former Lyon striker scored the winner in the second period.
