UCL: Villa’s comeback fall short against PSG as Barcelona pip Dortmund to semi-final

PSG defeated Aston Villa 5-4 on aggregate in their UCL quarter-final clash

Aston Villa scored two second-half goals to defeat PSG 3-2 in the return leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final tie on Tuesday.

The result was insufficient as the French champions qualified for the final four with a paltry 5-4 aggregate win.

Unai Emery’s team lost the first leg 3-1 at Parc des Prince last week, and in the early stages of the return fixture, Villa looked as flat as they were in France.

Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes extended PSG’s lead in the tie with two quick goals before the half-hour mark.

Then Youri Tielemans pulled on back for the home team after his shot was deflected home by Willian Pacho.

Villa resumed the second half with improved intensity and clipped PSG twice under 12 minutes of the restart.

John McGinn sliced a shot into the top corner in the 55th minute before Marcus Rashford set up Ezri Konsa for a well-placed finish into the bottom corner.

The home team, however, could not find another vital goal to equalise the tie, as PSG saw the game through.

In the other night game, Sehrou Guirassy scored a hat trick in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 victory over Barcelona at the Signal Iduna Park.

However, Barcelona’s 4-0 triumph from the first leg proved too huge a margin for the home team.

Barcelona will play the winner of the clash between Inter and Bayern Munich in the semi-final, while PSG await either Real Madrid or Arsenal.
