Following the completion of matches in the opening day of the 2019/20 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, TheCable selects the team of week one.

Following their heroics against Heartland in Okigwe, four MFM FC players made the cut with Tony Bolus, their coach, securing a place on our list.

Jimoh Oni, two-goal hero, deservedly earns his place in the XI.

Below is TheCable’s NPFL team of the week.

Abayomi Folarin [MFM FC]

Experienced keeper Abayomi Folarin frustrated Heartland with some world class saves. He was at his best to deny Joseph Onoja, Christian Pyagbara and Chinedu Ohanachom from scoring.

Adeyinka Nojeem [MFM FC]

The energetic Adeyinka Nojeem was a menace at the right hand side and provided a sweet assist to Clement Ogwu for the winner.

Festus Austin [Rivers United]

The Rivers United skipper marshalled the back line with perfection. He also won aerial duels and peppered Nyima Nwagua.

Joshua Akpudje [MFM FC]

Joshua Akpudje, the Nigerian U23 defender, was solid at the back, cutting out supplies to the Heartland attackers.

Daniel Itodo [Plateau United]

DSS FC product Daniel Itodo was involved in two of Plateau United goals. His long thrusts and attacking runs gave Lobi Stars lot of concerns at the back.

Michael Enaruma [Rivers United]

Enaruma was disciplined at the middle of the park for Rivers United at Kano Pillars. It was a result they deserved.

Jimoh Oni [Abia Warriors]

Jimoh Oni was the chief tormentor for Abia Warriors against Katsina United. His first goal was a brilliant free kick, while the second was a simple finish.

Idris Guda [Wikki Tourists]

When Wikki Tourists needed someone to rescue them from the shackles of Jigawa Golden Stars, it was Guda that inspired the comeback with a brilliant winner.

Mfon Udoh [Akwa United]

If Akwa United are to compete for the title, then NPFL record top scorer Mfon Udoh must produce the goods. The NPFL legend helped the Promise Keepers pick up a valuable point at Warri Wolves.

Clement Ogwu [MFM FC]

He was the heartbreaker that left a sore wound in the heart of Heartland faithfuls. Ogwu’s header from Nojeem’s cross turned Ikechukwu Ezenwa to a pedestrian.

Amos Gyang [Plateau United]

Quality makes the pint sized winger stand out in key moments. He latched on to Michael Ibe’s pass to score against the bewildered Lobi Stars.
