Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi
The governing council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has approved the appointment of Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi as the substantive vice-chancellor of the institution.
The 11th council, chaired by Olanrewaju Tejuoso, announced the appointment during its 80th extraordinary meeting on Friday.
Fawehinmi’s five-year, non-renewable tenure will take effect from February 10, 2026.
He is currently the vice-chancellor of the Nigerian British University.

The council also approved the extension of Mathew Adamu’s tenure as acting VC.
Adamu, who the federal government first appointed on August 11, will remain in office until Fawehinmi’s tenure begins.
Fawehinmi is a professor of clinical anatomy and biomedical anthropology with extensive experience in university administration.

His previous roles include two-time head of department of anatomy (2005-2009), associate dean (2010-2012), dean (2012-2014) of the faculty of basic medical sciences, and two terms as deputy vice-chancellor academic (2016-2020) at the University of Port Harcourt.
He is a fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland (FRAI) and a fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialities of Nigeria (FAMedS).
Fawehinmi has over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, supervised over 100 BSc projects, 15 MSc, and 13 PhD/MD dissertations.
He also holds a federal government Patent for the design of the AMRG Anthropometry Chair for Dimensional Body Measurements.
