Union advocates mental health support as OAU student commits suicide over failed exams

A student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has died by suicide after learning he would have to repeat the same class for a second time.

The student, Ajibola Ibitayo with matriculation DEN/2021/023, injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun state.

Abiodun Olarewaju, OAU’s public relations officer, confirmed the death of the second-year dentistry student.

He said the entire community of OAU, disturbed by the incident, has been thrown into mourning.

Ibitayo, multiple sources reveal, committed the act after the results of his examinations were released on Wednesday.

Simeon Bamire, the university’s vice-chancellor, appealed to parents to teach their children that setbacks are a part of life.

He also encouraged students to see failure as a chance to find a different path to success.

Adebayo Idris, president of the OAU Dental Students Association (IFUDSA), described the death as a “devastating loss” and a “painful reminder of the silent battles many students face.”

He urged students to support each other and seek professional help for their mental health struggles.

The association reiterated its dedication to improving student welfare and mental health support.
