US COVID-19 death toll exceeds 50,000

At least 50,000 persons have died from complications of COVID-19, according to the John Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Centre.

The US death toll is double the number of fatalities in Spain (22,524) and Italy (25,969).

The center said the US, which is now the worst hit country, has more than 870,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The worst hit region in the world is New York state with 20,982 deaths and 271,590 confirmed cases, according to the John Hopkins report.

About 40 percent of the deaths in the US occurred in New York state, the epicenter of the outbreak, followed by New Jersey Michigan and Massachusetts.

Despite the rising figures, the US government, last week announced plans on how to reopen its economy.

States like Alaska, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Colorado, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas have also announced partial reopening amid the pandemic.

According to the John Hopkins coronavirus report on Friday, confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide is 2,766,611 and 194,456 deaths in 185 countries/regions.
