Kamaru Usman defeated Tyron Woodley to become the first African-born and Nigerian to lift the welterweight title from a one-sided performance in the co-main event of UFC 235 on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.
Usman won the Missouri man by a score of 50 to 44, 50-45, 50-45.
With the victory over Woodley, the Nigerian has improved to 15-1.
Since winning the Ultimate Fighter 21, he has now won 14 in a row and is 10-0 in the UFC.
The “Nigerian nightmare” was born in Nigeria and moved to the USA when he was 8.
He won a Division II wrestling championship at Nebraska-Kearney and was insistent he wouldn’t be outwrestled by the more pedigreed Woodley.
The 31-year old broke into the UFC in 2015 from its long-running competition reality show.
He won his first eight UFC bouts and battered ex-champ Rafael Dos Anjos in November 2018 to earn his shot at Woodley’s belt.
