The election of the Enugu state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has been disrupted by violence.

The association for doctors and dentists in the state scheduled the election of its executive council for Tuesday in the state capital.

But disagreement among the doctors degenerated into violence as ballot boxes were broken and the ballot papers scattered on the grounds.

Some of the doctors were reported to have engaged in fisticuffs with thugs who were brought to the venue by a faction of the association.

The video of the incident, which is trending on social media, has elicited condemnation.

“It’s a shame that a noble profession like medicine can descend so low,” Oluwaseun Ajidagba, a Twitter user said.

“Just Chairmanship election into the Nigerian Medical Association in Enugu ended in a violent clash. If NMA election that was supposed to be civil ends like this then what do you expect from Edo Election?”

King Joe, another Twitter user, said he is disappointed that doctors could resort to fighting during their election.

“I don’t know what happened in Enugu NMA Elections but I am highly disappointed our superiors who stoop so low as to scatter ballot boxes and even fight,” he said.
