Voting has commenced in the Borno local government election for 27 LGA chairmanship and 312 councillorship seats.

The election started in the 27 LGAs and 312 wards of Borno on Saturday morning.

Only six political parties are represented in the ballot papers seen by TheCable.

On Friday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced that it will not participate in the Borno LGA election over what it described as ‘lack of trust in the electoral umpire and the high cost of expression of interest and nomination forms’.

PDP alleged that the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) did not provide opposition parties with sufficient reasons to trust the credibility and fairness of the election.

Reacting to PDP’s withdrawal, Tahir Shettima, the chairman of BOSIEC, said the commission would not force any political party to participate in the election.

Shettima said the prices of the nomination forms were fixed after consultations with political parties.
