President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia on Friday congratulated his opponent, Adama Barrow, to whom he lost the 2016 presidential election.

Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s former president, acted in a manner atypical of African leaders when he conceded the 2015 election to Muhammadu Buhari, the incumbent president.

In this three-minute video posted on YouTube, Jammeh is seen congratulating Barrow in a cheerful mood.

“I’m calling you to wish you all the best, the Gambian people have spoken and I have no reason to contest the will of Almighty Allah,” he said.

Jammeh has been in power for 22 years. The West African country has not had a smooth transfer of power since independence in 1965.

Accepting lose in elections is typical of English Speaking Africa. This is the reverse in French African. Just see what recently happened in Gabon which is French speaking. I am happy democracy is taking roots in Africa.
