The Kano government says it will establish an agency to discourage street begging in the state.

Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, disclosed this on Wednesday, when he received the leadership of the amalgamation of civil society organisations at the government house.

The Kano governor said street begging prevents children from “learning the religion and modern education system,” adding that the state government can’t fold its arms and allow the menace to continue.

“An agency will be put in place with full staff to look into this issue of street begging,” he said.

“We just cannot fold our hands and see the lives of innocent kids being wasted away through this menace of street begging.

“We are happy to receive you and we are thankful for your unrelenting concern. It is also true that we must evolve new strategies in dealing with this issue.”

Prior to the visit, the CSOs, under the platform of the Kano civil society forum, had sent a letter to the governor on the need to collaborate with the state government on the effective implementation of the law against street begging.

The letter, dated September 23, 2021, was titled: ‘Urgent Call to Ensure Total Enforcement of the Law Banning Street Begging in Kano State’.
