Adebayo Adelabu, minister of power, says the federal government is working to ensure outstanding payments are made to power generation companies to resolve the declining electricity supply.

This was disclosed in a statement on Friday by Bolaji Tunji, special adviser, strategic communication and media relation to the minister of power.

Adelabu said the blackout experienced in the country is due to low supply of gas to power generating companies.

He said the payments were to ensure improved gas supply and bolstered power generation.

“This will also enable distribution companies to supply more electricity to Nigerians,” Adelabu said.

“We acknowledge the current unsustainable situation, and we expect a turnaround immediately.”

The minister said efforts are being made to guarantee a prompt end to the nation’s electricity situation.

Adelabu said there has been a noticeable decrease in power supply over the past weeks.

According to the minister, the circumstances affected production, leading to a blackout in some parts of the country.

“This is mainly due to a decreased level of gas supply to generation companies,” he said

“This situation has led to a lower level of energy supplied to load centres, which has affected supply of electricity to distribution companies,”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had also attributed the gradual decrease in available generation into the grid to gas supply constraints.
