Magnus Abe, a former senator representing Rivers south-east, has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Abe announced his decision to join SDP in a post published on his Facebook page on Friday.

“Yes I am and I have been a member of the Social Democratic Party SDP,” the former senator said.

“I remain irrevocably committed to the ideals that have driven my politics through the years.

“We will continue to do all we can to improve internal democracy in the politics of our country and focus on the people. SDP progress. SDP progress. We move.”

Recently, Abe resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the events that trailed the governorship primary in Rivers.

In April, the former senator declared his interest to contest the 2023 Rivers governorship election on the platform of the APC.

But while the APC primary was being conducted, Abe, in a press briefing, declared that he would not accept the outcome, saying the process that produced the delegates was not credible.

Abe had been at loggerheads with Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation. The conflict between the duo resulted in the disqualification of the party from contesting the 2019 governorship election in Rivers.

Speaking in an interview after he dumped the APC, the former senator said he will appear on the ballot for the 2023 gubernatorial election in Rivers but he did not mention the party.
