The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) has handed over 28 categories of humanitarian and warehouse equipment to the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS).
Speaking during the handover in Abuja on Friday, Abubakar Kende, secretary-general of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, said humanitarian emergencies have become more complex, placing growing pressure on frontline responders.
Kende said the donation aims to strengthen the organisation’s emergency response capacity across the country.
He said the gesture marks a new phase in a year-long partnership between both organisations aimed at improving Nigeria’s disaster preparedness, logistics efficiency, and crisis communications systems.

“Humanitarian work is increasingly demanding and requires specialised human and material resources to cope with the rising needs,” Kende said.
“A sophisticated logistics system is essential for transporting and delivering relief materials efficiently during interventions.”
Guy Adoua, WFP deputy country director, said the collaboration with the NRCS was designed to produce long-term institutional gains, not just short-term support.

“Our partnership began with a shared commitment to strengthen systems and enhance the ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies,” he said.
“WFP also supported a comprehensive organisational capacity assessment across key operational and technical areas.”
Adoua said the equipment handover is expected to strengthen emergency response in four major areas, including faster and more coordinated interventions, stronger warehousing and supply chain operations, better crisis communication, and improved readiness for climate-induced and conflict-driven disasters.
He said the strengthened capacity will translate to quicker, safer, and more efficient assistance for vulnerable communities affected by shocks across the country.
