Will Jesus watch Big Brother Naija?

Before you scream ‘blasphemy’ and ‘sacrilege,’ I carve your indulgence, please hear me out. I’m not trying to be irreverent in any way. The phrase ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ (WWJD) used to be quite popular. I may be behind the times but WWJD was so popular it was printed on stickers, t-shirts, bracelets, name it. Christians used this phrase as a standard or yardstick with which to measure and help keep themselves in check. The idea was that (based on all the Biblical teachings), when faced with certain situations, if you ask yourself what Jesus would have done, you could make better decisions. I believe it’s in this vein that the above question was asked. By the way, I wasn’t the one who originally asked whether Jesus would have watched Big Brother Naija, just in case you think it sounds blasphemous. Although I must thank God for small mercies that Christians don’t have to fight or kill to defend their God. I wouldn’t ask this same question of some other religion’s icons.

Anyhow, the author of the above question is Pastor Sarah Omakwu of Family Worship Centre, FWC, Abuja. It was during one of the services on Sunday August 15, 2021 that the special message from the Pastor was aired. One of the reasons I just happened to catch the service online is because I used to attend FWC so I still follow most of their online programming. That Sunday when I joined in, Pastor Wilson just happened to be ministering and that influenced my decision to watch. Anyway, on the message from Pastor Sarah, it was essentially to help set members of the church straight and help them with their Christian beliefs especially on the issue of Big Brother Naija. She warned Christians to be wary of the devil’s wiles s the line between line between good and bad was becoming blurred. Then of course, she rounded off with: Will Jesus Watch Big Brother Naija? I doubt that anyone can really answer this question with certainty but it’s safe to say that it’s a Yes and No response. Could Jesus Watch Big Brother Naija? Yes, if only to reach out to “sinners.” However, will Jesus watch Big Brother Naija, sit down and revel in it? Like, stay up late to catch all the shenanigans from the housemates? Or get a front row seat to the jacuzzi parties on Fridays? The answer has to be a big No.

At the end of the day, FWC members were duly warned by Pastor Sarah against watching Big Brother Naija, especially this year’s edition because according to her previous editions of the reality TV show were better. How does she know? Well, that’s another matter for another day. Suffice it to say that human beings can only hope to do better. If as Christians, asking ‘what Jesus will do’ would what we use to gauge all our decisions, the world would be a better place. But then, we’d be less than human because there are many things we know Jesus would have done that no one is in a hurry to do.

Is Big Brother Naija Season 6 The Most Boring?

Regarding the previous editions of Big Brother Naija and how this edition (season 6) compares, TV viewers appear to have mixed feelings. Perhaps, I should say there appear to be more people who think this season is more boring than say the immediate two past seasons-season 4 and season 5 (i.e. season Tacha and season Kiddrica). This time around, I was holding out hope that things will become more interesting. Meanwhile, there are almost as many considerations of what ‘interesting’ means, as there are viewers. For instance, I still think that the first edition of Big brother Nigeria (2006) was the most interesting. That was the season (1) that produced Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Gideon Okeke, Katung Aduwak, etc. But it isn’t for nothing that it took almost ten years to secure sponsorship for BBN season 2. And there has been no looking back since then as BBN is now guaranteed to hold every year.

Still…we are more than halfway into the season already and nothing’s heating up. In fact, every once in a while, a few housemates talk about being tired emotionally and physically. The long and short of that is they are bored. Imagine housemates, who so many are waiting to be entertained by a he name of content, bored. Housemate for housemate, there are only a handful of season 6 housemates that can stand be compared with the immediate past season. In fact, I’d thought I was the only one who was stuck in the past until I started seeing other people complaining about how  these new housemates were boring.
