Winners get N4.8m as mountain bikers, runners, hikers compete at Chaingang festival in Abuja

Winners at the 4th edition of the Chaingang MTB Festival in Abuja

Winners earned over N4 million at the 4th edition of the Chaingang MTB Festival, held in Abuja on November 22.

The event, themed “Be Ya Gnu Abuja Pe (Let’s Go To The Abuja Mountains)”, was hosted around the Mpape crushed rocks landmark in the city.

Participants competed in four distinct activities, including a men’s 42-kilometre mountain bike race, a women’s 35-kilometre bike trail and the 20-kilometre. Others are a 20-kilometre race for runners, while hikers embark on a six-kilometre trek.

Fanam Rumum won the men’s 42km biking race after crossing the finish line at 1:43:00. Joel Berry Monday chased hard to finish second, clocking 1:46:00, while Emmanuel Ani fought back to claim third in 1:50:00.

On the women’s side, the podium told a new story. The 2024 female champion was unable to repeat her success, and the top three places went to Mary Sunday (2:04:39), Sylvia Odom (2:05:10) and Suzzie Angmun (2:05:50). Their tight finish underlined how tactical and competitive the Mpape hills had become.

For the 20 km trail run, Julius Kiv of Plateau claimed the men’s title after navigating a route that was seven kilometres longer than last year’s comparable race, and under the scorching heat of the day.

Ernest Oberechukwu and Bomen Clement finished second and third, respectively.
