Tiger Woods has said that his arrest for drink driving had nothing to do with alcohol, but was caused by an “unexpected reaction to prescribed medication”.

Woods made this known in a statement released on Monday evening, hours after his arrest.

The former world’s top golfer was taken into custody at the Palm Beach County Jail at 7:18am in Jupiter Island, Florida.

According to jail records, he was released at 10.50am on his own recognisance.

“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved,” Woods’ statement read.

“What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications.

“I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.

“I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too.

“I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again.

“I fully cooperated with law enforcement, and I would like to personally thank the representatives of the Jupiter Police Department and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office for their professionalism,” the statement ended.

The 41-year-old is one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, with 79 career PGA Tour wins to his name.

The world most recognised golfer has not played professionally since February due to lingering back issues.

The American has had four operations in three years on his troublesome back, which has limited him to three tournament starts in the past two years.
