Austin Ejide may have let in two goals in his underwhelming showing against Scotland in London last week, but there was cheery news for him on Friday when his wife, Chito, safely delivered a bouncing baby girl in Chicago, United States.

The Super Eagles camp in Jacksonville, also in US, was in jubilant mood when the goalkeeper gleefully relayed the news, notwithstanding the injury worries of first-team players, Elderson Echiejile and Ahmed Musa.

Coach Stephen Keshi, promptly named the child, the World Cup baby of Nigeria, as she was birthed barely 10 days to Nigeria’s opening World Cup game against Iran on June 16.

The father had other ideas, though. When asked what he would want to name his baby girl, Ejide, beaming with smiles, said “Chimamanda” which means “My God will not fail”.

Without confirming from the dad, one could hazard a guess that the choice of name was inspired by Nigeria’s World Cup ambitions.

And Austin Ejide sure hopes his God will not fail the Super Eagles in Brazil.
